Frequently asked questions
- What is dial up internet access?
- Dial up internet access is when a computer connects to the internet using a standard telephone line. It does this by using a modem, which converts the digital data into an analogue signal, and back again. The reason it is called dial up is that a telephone number is used e.g. for UK2 Dial Up 0845 665 3000.
- Do I need to buy any equipment?
- You just need a computer, a modem and a telephone line. Most computers (especially laptops) come with modems built in along with the connecting cables. If you don't have this supplied with your computer, you can buy external dial up modems very cheaply from computer shops.
- Is it really free?
- UK2 Dial Up doesn't have a set up or monthly fee, so you won't pay UK2 anything at all. It is what's called a pay as you go service, so if you don't use it there are absolutely no charges. When you do use it to connect to the internet there is just a pence per minute charge which will appear on your telephone bill
- I have broadband, so why would I need UK2 Dial Up?
- You can always have both broadband and dial up. The advantage of signing up to a dial up service is that if there are any problems with your broadband supplier you could use your dial up service as a back up. Also a dial up service can be used from any location, your home, office, your friend's place, a hotel - anywhere there is a telephone line
